Australia Racist? Couldn't be...no way...

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,18362815%5E29277,00.html

Saw the following article on a Canadian news service site http://www.nealenews.com

I would never think that Australia was a racist country? - (Sarcasm).

It's interesting taking Australian Constitutional law and seeing sections like the following. Take a look. Basically it says the government can discount your vote if you're of a certain race that they don't like. Interesting...

Australian Constitution - Section 25 - Provisions as to races disqualified from voting
For the purposes of the last section, if by the law of any State all persons of any race are disqualified from voting at elections for the more numerous House of the Parliament of the State, then, in reckoning the number of the people of the State or of the Commonwealth, persons of the race resident in that State shall not be counted.

How can that not be amended!

It is sad Australia is often a very racist place. It can make one sad and ashamed to be Australian. Australian's are racist against the Indigenous people (the true owners) of this Country, and this attitude extends to those people from other nations and religions. People from other countries often believe that Australia is not a racist place due to the media coverage of the 2000 Olympic Games. This was an artifical performance. Midnight Oil's tee-shirts revealed the truth of race relations in this Country. So yes, to make a harsh but true generalisation Australia Racist? - yes. Australians racist? - A large proportion. It is a very sad fact. Unfortunately, many of our political leaders fuel racist attitudes. Hence, attempts to make changes to the constitution are engineered by politicans in power who really don't want to change anything.

(good to see you are doing some work)

You idiots have now idea what your talking about... for instance, why don't you put that article into context by saying - which country in the world does not have underlying racist tensions? That is the criteria cited in the article for what makes a country racist... Check your facts and have a look in your own backyard before you start throwing out ill-educated and offensive posts like that - that goes for you as well prisco not just the lowlife who saw some olympics on TV. Go tackle a bus you moron!

Good thoughts so far there team. I'd agree with the premise that there are elements of racism in every nation and in the feelings that have traditionally made up nationalism itself.

I think the real point is that most people took stuff like that out of their constitutions before things like electronic banking, mobile phones and handheld tetris were invented.

I can't beleive that no one has tried to amend this in 100 years. It still exists in every version of the act that I looked up. I'll look into it.
